Summary:
Zenobia -- the crystal city -- lay hidden for centuries in the western desert of Glendarra undetected by the clans or by the Techs until its ruler's only daughter Chrysana foresaw danger . . .Excerpt:
Warned in her dreams about the man who would destroy her father's city, Chrysana d'Morne prepares to murder the sensual Drew Richards, but when she falls in love with him, she is forced to choose between her city and her heart.
Drew found that he was curious about the woman who had tried to kill him. Able to indulge in that curiosity, Drew turned her face to him.
Shock froze him into immobility. He felt his lungs suspend breathing, and his heart skipped a beat--or even two. It was as if the earth ground to a halt and everything in the universe stopped.
In the dimly lit darkness, finally he recognized her.
"Chrysana," he murmured, confounded by her presence, and yet discovering that he was not really surprised at her identity. He actually felt relieved that it was she, because it meant that she was real and not, after all, a figment of his fevered imagination. "Chrysana," he breathed.
She stared at him defiantly even though her cheeks were wet with tears and her eyes sparkled with those that had not yet fallen. "Yes," she whispered in response. "It is I."
"I was afraid to believe that you were real. I thought you were only a product of wishes and dreams." He could still barely believe it was she, and yet he didn't doubt it for a moment. He felt as confused as the emotions that were knotting inside him. Feelings spun within him like out of control tornadoes. He felt the resurgence of the pain of Marcy's death, of the guilt he felt not only because he hadn't been able to prevent his wife's death, but also because he was alive and Marcy was not. And overriding all his other emotions was the sharp awareness of desire for the warm, living woman in his arms-despite the fact that the only way she wanted him was dead.
